This course provides opportunities to develop competencies necessary to meet the needs of individuals throughout the lifespan in a safe, legal, and ethical manner using the nursing process. Students learn concepts and skills necessary for maintaining standard precautions, physical, psychological and nutritional safety, along with skills needed in therapeutic interventions. Students are introduced to the concepts of professional nursing, patient needs, safety, communication, teaching/learning, critical thinking, ethical-legal, rural nursing, cultural and ethnic diversity, and interdisciplinary patient-centered care.

An integration of lab experiences focusing on psychomotor nursing skills needed to assist individuals in meeting basic human needs. Application of the nursing process and hands-on learning experiences for nursing skills, patient assessments, nutritional safety, and basic therapeutic skills are practiced and demonstrated.

NRSG 234 - Adult Nursing I. 3 Credits.

This course builds upon the knowledge and skills acquired in Foundations of Nursing, and places them in the context of patient-centered care. Social, cultural, ethical, rural and legal issues, end-of-life and palliative care across diverse adult populations are introduced. Health promotion and prevention throughout the adult lifespan, with specific focus on the geriatric patient, is emphasized. Normal aging, health alterations associated with aging, and their implications are addressed.

This clinical introduces the student to nursing practice in care of the stable adult patient. This includes care of the adult in a variety of health care settings. NRSG 236 - Health and Illness of Maternal Nursing. 3 Credits.

In this course, the student applies holistic concepts to the professional nursing care of the childbearing family including conception, prenatal, intrapartum, postpartum and newborn care. Content addresses health and complex alterations, reproduction and menopause, nutrition, therapeutic communication, ethical, legal, cultural and evidenced-based practice.

NRSG 237 - Health and Illness of Maternal Nursing Clinical. 1 Credit.

This clinical introduces the student to the role of the registered nurse in the care of the childbearing family. Students will utilize the nursing process to assess and develop individualized plans of care for mother and infant. Emphasis will be placed on patient education to promote healthy mother infant and childbearing family bonding.

NRSG 240 - Nursing Care of Adults I. 4 Credits.

This course explores the pathophysiological impact of acute and chronic disorders in adult patients, emphasizing the nurse’s role in assessment, diagnosis, and intervention. Students will learn to identify disease processes, formulate physiological and psychosocial nursing diagnoses, and implement evidence-based care strategies tailored to developmental stages, nutritional needs, and cultural influences. Through a holistic lens, the course integrates physical, emotional, ethical, and legal considerations to support optimal patient outcomes. This clinical course prepares students to deliver safe, effective, and culturally competent nursing care to adults experiencing complex, acute, and chronic health conditions across diverse clinical settings. Emphasis is placed on understanding pathophysiology, applying current technologies and treatments, and developing individualized care and teaching plans. Students will apply clinical skills learned in semester one of the program and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to provide patient-centered care. The course also explores diet therapies, demographic-focused interventions, and community resources that support recovery and long-term health. Through critical analysis of patient data and integration of concepts from NRSG 240, students will enhance their ability to plan, implement, and evaluate holistic nursing care.

In this course, the student focuses on the nursing concepts utilizing basic human needs, developmental theory, nursing process, therapeutic communication, and nursing interventions to promote and maintain health for clients and families experiencing mental-health issues. The student will examine client responses to stressors across the life span. Tasks of biological-behavioral concepts in psychosocial nursing care, rural and cultural impacts will be addressed.

NRSG 256 - Pathophysiology. 3 Credits.

Offered spring and autumn. Offered at Missoula College. Restricted to students in the Registered Nursing program. This course introduces the student to the basic principles and processes of pathophysiology including cellular communication, genes and genetic disease, forms of cellular injury, nutrition, fluid and electrolyte/acid base balance, immunity, stress coping and illness, and tumor biology. Pathophysiology of the most common alterations according to body systems will be discussed as well as the latest developments in research and patient-centered nursing interventions.

NRSG 271 - NCLEX Review. 1 Credit.

Restricted to students in the Registered Nursning program. This intensive NCLEX review course is designed to prepare nursing students for successful completion of the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). Through a structured blend of content review, test-taking strategies, and practice questions, students will reinforce core nursing concepts across all major content areas, including pharmacology, medical-surgical, maternal-child, and mental health nursing. Emphasis is placed on clinical judgment, prioritization, and application of the nursing process. NRSG 275 - Leadership Concepts. 2 Credits.

Coreq., NRSG 276. Restricted to students in the Registered Nursing program. Topics include role differentiation among care providers, organization and prioritization, delegation, supervision, and appropriate practice, management of the needs of individuals and groups of clients, and management of healthcare resources. Additionally, the course helps the student integrate didactic content from all other nursing courses and will help the student in the transition from the student role to the role of the registered nurse. Students examine the principles of professional identity and their role in nursing practice and demonstrate behaviors consistent with the values and ethics of the nursing profession in both simulated and real-world settings. Students examine legal/ethical issues in nursing, values clarification, conflict resolution and consensus building, and effective communication techniques in the employment setting.

NRSG 276 - Leadership Clinical. 1 Credit.

In this clinical course, students will work alongside a charge nurse, manager, supervisor, or other designated healthcare leader to explore the organizational, ethical, and collaborative dimensions of nursing practice. Through guided clinical experiences, students will examine healthcare systems, apply leadership and management principles, participate in quality improvement initiatives, and engage in interprofessional teamwork.
