General Graduate Program Requirements

The minimum GPA for any graduate program is 3.0. Individual programs may require more than a 3.0 to remain in good standing. 

The minimum grade for a course to be accepted toward any requirement is C. Individual programs may require higher grades for specific courses.

MASTER OF ARTS - LINGUISTICS

  • Students seeking a Master of Arts in Linguistics at the University of Montana complete a 36-credit-hour program of study.
  • Thesis and comprehensive exam options are available.
    • Any student may elect to pursue the comprehensive exam option.
    • Students wishing to pursue the thesis option must submit a thesis proposal draft in their second semester and a final thesis proposal before the start of the following fall semester. Students whose proposals are approved may then elect to pursue the thesis option.

Complete two semesters of one of the following courses (6 credits):
Seminar
Seminar in Linguistics
Complete 4 elective courses chosen in consultation with your advisor (12 credits).
Thesis (6 credits)
Comprehensive Exam Option
Complete three semesters of one of the following courses (9 credits):
Seminar
Seminar in Linguistics
Complete 5 elective courses chosen in consultation with your advisor (15 credits).
Complete a comprehensive exam
