ARTH 371 - Manga and Anime: History, Practice, and Form. 3 Credits.

Surveys the history and genres of Japanese comics (manga) and animation (anime). Students will learn how to analyze/draw the visual elements of manga and anime while also learning about cultural context, production, and reception. In addition to discussing common themes and narrative forms employed, students will learn to distinguish among, describe, and draw the various art styles and framing structures.

Offered intermittently. Prereqs., ARTH 150H or ARTH 201H and ARTH 250L or consent of instructor. Exploration of European art and architecture from 1600 to 1700. Level: undergraduate and graduate.

ARTH 439 - Contemporary American Indian Art. 3 Credits.

Prereq., ARTH 150H. Provides an overview of American Indian artwork with an emphasis on contemporary artwork from the United States and tribes that spanned the US-Canada border. Studies Native American artistic traditions, and discusses issues and themes particular to Indigenous artwork. Explores the cultural, political, social, and historic contexts for the artwork, providing students with a multidisciplinary understanding of Indigenous artwork. Prioritizes Indigenous voices as a direct source of knowledge and insight. Level: undergraduate.

ARTH 444 - Open Range: Land Art and the American Consciousness. 3 Credits.

Offered spring. The aim of this course is to investigate the sense of place in American visual arts of the 19th to 21st centuries. The course provides a roughly chronological view of the development of place in the American landscape, particularly in the west, and how that has been articulated by visual artists. Level: undergraduate.
