English as an Academic Second Language (EASL)

EASL 250 - Intermediate English for Academic Purposes I: Written Production. 3 Credits.

Offered autumn and spring. Strongly recommended for (i) international students admitted with intermediate or advanced English proficiency status as defined in the catalog, (ii) international students who are new to academic English in North America, and/or (iii) domestic students who use English as Second Language. May not be taken at the same time as or after EASL 450 or WRIT 101. Concentration on reading and writing and study skills required for success in an American academic setting. Students will read academic texts and build proficiency in identifying and comprehending main ideas, supporting details, and academic vocabulary. Writing focus includes paragraph and essay structure (process & comparison patterns), basic research protocol, grammatical editing and citation. The course also introduces students to American academic culture and classroom expectations.

EASL 251 - Intermediate English for Academic Purposes II: Spoken Production. 3 Credits.

Offered autumn and spring. Strongly recommended for (i) international students admitted with intermediate or advanced English proficiency status as defined in the catalog, (ii) international students who are new to academic English in North America, and/or (iii) domestic students who use English as Second Language. May not be taken at the same time as or after EASL 451 or COMX 111. Concentration on listening, notetaking, speaking and study skills required for success in an American academic setting. Includes participating in and leading structured class discussions, and preparing formal presentations with appropriate research and technological support. The course also introduces students to American academic culture and classroom expectations.

EASL 451 - Advanced English for Academic Purposes II: Spoken Production. 3 Credits.

Offered autumn and spring. Strongly recommended for (i) international students admitted with intermediate or advanced English proficiency status as defined in the catalog, (ii) international students who are new to academic English in North America, and/or (iii) domestic students who use English as Second Language. May not be taken at the same time EASL 251 or COMX 111, or after COMX 111. Concentration on improving academic listening and speaking and study skills required for success in an American academic setting. Includes refining pronunciation, participating in informal and structured debates, leading class discussions, extemporaneous speaking, and preparing formal presentations with appropriate research and technological support. Students will learn to navigate American academic culture and its communicative expectations, engaging in social interactions on different topics and in different academic settings.
