Superintendent Leadership Graduate Certificate

General Graduate Program Requirements

The minimum GPA for any graduate program is 3.0. Individual programs may require more than a 3.0 to remain in good standing. 

The minimum grade for a course to be accepted toward any master’s or doctoral requirement is C. The minimum grade for a course to be accepted toward a certificate program is B-. Individual programs may require higher grades for specific courses.

Online Program Option

This program may be completed in an online format. Students interested in pursuing an online degree or certificate program are strongly encouraged to contact the offering department to discuss specific program and course modalities and create a plan of study with an academic advisor. The course requirements listed below may not be consistently offered via online delivery.

Graduate Certificate - Superintendent Leadership

  • Students pursuing superintendent licensure must have a master’s degree or higher in education or educational leadership, three years of experience as a licensed teacher or school counselor, and licensure as a principal. Additionally, one must have a minimum of one year of licensed experience as a principal or participate in a supervised Board of Public Education internship as superintendent. Additional information about these specific licensure requirements can be directed to the Department of Educational Leadership.
  • In addition to the required coursework, those seeking superintendent licensure must complete required field experiences. Please contact the Department of Educational Leadership for additional information.

Complete the following courses:

Those who did not complete Montana school law and Montana school finance as part of their principal licensure program will also need the following courses to meet Montana licensure requirements.0-6
School Law (or an OPI- and UM-approved professional development course in Montana school law)
Finance of Public Education (or an OPI- and UM-approved professional development course in Montana school finance)
